I spent my early 20s struggling with chronic back pain, which limited many aspects of my life. Most days it was manageable but even on the good days I would have to be cautious about how I chose to spend my time. The low seats in the cinema aggravated my back so I couldn’t go to the movies; I could drive but if I sat in the car for too long I’d struggle to get out and walk afterwards; I could walk long distances but once my back tired out I’d struggle to move again after I had stopped. Even sleeping was difficult- on a bad night I’d have to wake up and move my bedding every time I needed to change positions, because it was too painful to move underneath my quilt. I often struggled to lie flat so sometimes had to sleep with pillows under my knees to stop the pain getting too intense.

I went to many different physios, osteopaths, doctors, etc. but nothing really seemed to work. I did back care yoga where I was half the age of the rest of the group but still had to have some of the movements modified because I just couldn’t manage them. I remember crying during that first yoga class and having to go for a walk afterwards before I could fold myself back into the car. I had to get a friend to take the bus into town once to drive my car home from a physio appointment because I didn’t think I would be strong enough to put the clutch in. My friends got used to me bailing on activities because I didn’t think I’d be up to it, or taking myself off to do some stretching in a quiet corner if I’d managed to make it out.

I really struggled to talk about it too, it was embarrassing and uncomfortable, and since nothing seemed to make any difference I had given up on going to specialists. Fortunately, one of my housemates got sick of me limping around the house and made me book in to see a physio who specialised in pain. Dave Moen of Form Physiotherapy helped me to learn about pain and the relationship that it had with my body. I learnt about what my body was capable of and how to move past my mental barriers and challenge myself physically. After a while I was ready to face the world and joined Freedom Fitness.

In the beginning I stuck to a program that Pete put together for me after consulting with Dave. This was a really fun way for me to start exploring more of what my body could do and I got a real kick out of it, but soon I was ready for more and that’s where Stephanie took over! Initially I started off with Steph writing programs for me and keeping an eye on me to make sure that I was doing things properly and not skipping reps (which I would never do- don’t listen to her!) Once I was feeling more confident with that I progressed to PT sessions with Steph who could push me harder than I could possibly push myself, and absolutely demolishing those old ideas that I had about my body and what it was capable of doing. Stephanie enabled me to access a strength in my body that I had no idea existed. Now I work with Zina and that has come with a whole bunch of new challenges as I incorporate more cardio (and coordination!) and don’t get to stop until I’m so puffed I can’t even talk- no mean feat!

When Dave the physio first encouraged me to join a gym I was really reluctant. I couldn’t see the appeal of working out in public and I had an image of gyms in my head that was not at all positive. But Dave recommended Freedom Fitness anyway, saying that it was a friendly place and not filled with intimidating people in lycra! I’m so glad he did! Freedom has been a place where I’ve been able to make friends, enjoy myself and learn more about the strength of my body than I ever thought possible! I moved house a little while ago and briefly changed gyms to one that was more convenient, but nothing felt the same and I soon decided that the relaxed friendliness of Freedom was worth the extra time in the car each day.

If you had told me three years ago that I’d be working out multiple times a week, that I did boot camp and saw a PT regularly, I’d probably have laughed in your face and then felt really sad, because I’d come pretty close to accepting that the pain was going to be an ongoing part of my life but I certainly wasn’t happy about it! Fortunately, I’ve had an opportunity to carve out a different path and learn new and exciting ways to push my boundaries and strengthen myself both mentally and physically. The people here at Freedom Fitness have been a huge part of that, encouraging and supporting me all the way. What a bunch of legends!
It’s been an amazing journey for me, and I look forward to continuing on to the next challenge- which, knowing Zina, will probably have an animal name and require much more coordination than I am generally capable of… But I’m nailing the inchworms now, so she can bring it on!

Jake McCann, heavyweight office worker of Adelaide. Age: 21. Weight: 126kg. Height: 183cm; 178cm when slouched. Reach: yet to raise arm for measurement. Win/Loss Record: TBA. Belt: 40in and counting. Verdict: Fat.

Finishing high school at a healthy weight of 88kg, I ventured into the world of insurance at the age of 18, and with the role, came benefits, including the “10kg curse”. By the end of my first 6 months in the role, I was already 98kg. Luxurious eating continued at a barnstorming pace and by my 21st birthday, I caved in floors at 126kg. Damn you *insert popular fast food chicken outlet*!

With pride at stake (whatever remained), I joined a franchise gym next to the office. That endeavor ended not long after. Running on a treadmill hurt and I had no clue as to what to do with the various other machines. Being shy also meant I didn’t ask a professional for any help. Membership cancelled.

I then proceeded to change my diet. Less junk, more measured meals. Home brand instant oats for only $2 – woo hoo. Between my 21st Birthday in September 2015 and August 2017, I was able to cut down 10kg in this fashion; but still struggled with most forms of exercise, let alone getting a restful sleep each night.

I proposed to my girlfriend March 2017 and due to be married November 3rd, 2018. 116kg was not good enough and I vowed I would be under 100kg come that day. More was required than just a change in diet. Goal and deadline set.

Giving a gym another go was daunting. I may have been lighter, but I was sure to make a fool of myself as I attempted to run and lift. Step 1: research. Looking up the Freedom Fitness website, I got to know Peter and the other staff through their profiles on the website. Step 2: approach Peter and plead for help.

“Help, I am fat, I hate how I look, and I am too shy and ignorant to know how to fix it”. I must have made a good first impression when I met Pete…

Within 5 minutes, I was signed up for Freedom Fitness; and the next day I was in the gym with Pete, going through the functions of each machine, putting together a workout plan/routine.

Two days a week turned into three; and then four, and now five. 10 minutes walking on a treadmill turned into 10 minute jogs, and now 30 minute jogs for fun. Three standalone pushups turned into ten, and now 3 sets of 10 in amongst full routines.

Once attending Freedom Fitness on a regular basis, the greatest obstacle I faced was the extent of my own willpower. I cannot run another minute. I cannot do another set. That isn’t freedom; but rather prison bars put up in an attempt to return to the old Jake. Pete and the team instill the kind of Freedom everyone needs; the ability to live, and live well.

Over the last 12 months, with the fervent support of the wise wizard Peter and the forever charismatic Zina, I have drastically improved not only my physical appearance

and aptitude; but also my emotional and mental state. Their wholehearted methods of coaching will exceed any expectation; and I guarantee you will walk away with a new view of the world and your life; a healthier life.

In 12 months, I have dropped 20kg, to now weigh in at 96kg. With continued support, I have no doubt these number will continue to improve – 90kg by the wedding doesn’t seem so far fetched…

My experience has been fantastic. I approached Freedom Fitness knowing I needed to change my life around, for me, and my fiancée. Through sweat covered eyes, the Freedom team has never let me take my eye off the prize; each stride along this journey taken with their genuine support and supervision.

To say I recommend the services offered by Pete and the team is an understatement. To me, I will be forever humbled by the ability to move around with an ease I thought lost. My freedom has been restored; and at the very least I can now run around to tell everyone just that.

Join me and the team as soon as you have the chance – freedom is just one visit away

Best gym I have ever been to. Awesome staff and really friendly patrons in the gym and pool. Couldn’t be happier. Thanks guys.

Great location! Friendly staff! Clean pool! Affordable prices!

Peter, Zina and Steph make going to gym very palatable and interesting.

If anyone is looking for a new gym, this place is a must! It’s not your typical gym, you are left alone to do you own thing, but when you need assistance they are more than happy to help. They have certainly helped my progress and my confidence

Best place to lap swim in Adelaide due to easy parking and NO kids. Good people run the place.

Through dedicated support and genuine care, Peter and the Freedom Fitness team have given me the freedom that years of poor eating and choices robbed me of. Thank you from the bottom of my greatly reduced stomach!

More than just a gym, Peter and his staff will help you through your goals and support you in any way. It’s a nice community, come and join the family. You wont regret it.

I just wanted to say, thank you for your excellent service there, and compliment you on your friendly staff. Myself and a work colleague joined last week and we have really enjoyed the few classes that we have done and the good vibe at your gym due to the staff you have.

Personally speaking, I have done very little exercise in the past few years and have really let myself go and it was time to do something about it. Your gym is different to others that I have been to in the past, in that everyone is welcomed regardless of fitness levels and body shape.

I look forward to getting to the gym more often and am really happy to have come to your friendly gym. Zina’s classes have been great and she is such a positive friendly trainer that it makes you want to return, which is a positive thing and more importantly what I need to do!

Many thanks for welcoming us into your Gym, Best Wishes, Andrew

How to define Freedom Fitness? Hmmm…..A unique blend between:

  • Purpose – with the freedom to define this for yourself, or as part of the Freedom community
  • People – featuring a passionate and engaged team who know their stuff, and know their crowd – and it’s a great crowd
  • Place – both a gym AND pool together in one great CBD location
  • Pulse – there is a distinctive vibe, a feel – a culture. Feel free to zone out if you wish – or you can connect with it on your terms

In summary, it’s great and I enjoy it immensely – how can we keep all this to ourselves?

After many years at various gyms I have finally settled on Freedom Fitness and have regularly attended for the last five years. The gym opens early which suits my needs. Although compact, the gym has the range of equipment that enables me to vary my program for aerobic workouts, with any combination of bike, treadmill, rowing, swimming and cross training to anaerobic, with supported and/or free weights as desired.

The staff are dedicated, helpful and passionate about health and fitness and impart their knowledge and skills with enthusiasm, drive and generosity. They are refreshingly, authentic!

The clientele is a delightful mix of mature, multinational, multigendered, dedicated followers of fitness! The rigorous activity in the morning is blended with humour and friendly banter which is both engaging and encouraging. I find it heart-warming and comforting that so many people do wake up with good cheer and dedication to the hard work of becoming and being fit and healthy.

Freedom Fitness is where I find my tribe. I recommend it for anyone keen to succeed in improving and maintaining their fitness.
